The insistence on clerical celibacy was established in much of the Western Church beginning in the Fourth Century. It expanded slowly and unevenly throughout Late Antiquity and the early middle ages and at the Second Lateran Council in 1139 became Church Law. This Law of Celibacy decreed that Holy Orders were a absolute impediment to any in the higher clerical orders attempting to contract marriage. Any such marriage was automatically null and void in the eyes of the Church.

Among numerous ancient Western tropes about gender and procreation, “the seed and the soil” is arguably the oldest, most potent, and most invisible in its apparent naturalness. The Gender Vendors denaturalizes this proto-theory of procreation and deconstructs its contemporary legacy. As metaphor for gender and procreation, seed-and-soil constructs the father as the sole generating parent and the mother as nurturing medium, like soil, for the man’s seed-child. In other words, men give life; women merely give birth. The Gender Vendors examines seed-and-soil in the context of the psychology of gender, honor and chastity codes, female genital mutilation, the taboo on male femininity, femiphobia (the fear of being feminine or feminized), sexual violence, institutionalized abuse, the early modern witch hunts, the medicalization and criminalization of gender nonconformity, and campaigns against women’s rights. The examination is structured around particular watersheds in the history of seed-and-soil, for example, Genesis, ancient Greece, early Christianity, the medieval Church, the early modern European witch hunts, and the campaigns of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries against women’s suffrage and education. The neglected story of seed-and-soil matters to everyone who cares about gender equality and why it is taking so long to achieve.

People outside the church have often found Paul hard to stomach. His views on women, sex and marriage, his failure to attack the institution of slavery, his verbal attacks on his opponents have all come under fire. Regrettably, Paul hasn't always fared that much better among believers, who themselves, like the apostle Peter, sometimes wonder what to make of him. Let's face it - Paul just isn't politically correct. Brian Dodd offers a fresh look at the somewhat enigmatic and misunderstood Paul. With a pastor's heart and a scholar's insight, he helps us to bridge the gap between Paul's world and our own, providing the perspective we need to begin to make sense of Paul the man and his message. Whether you stand outside the church looking in or whether even from the inside you struggle to make sense of Paul in the contemporary world, The Problem with Paul will deepen your understanding and help you to grapple with one of the New Testament's most important authors.

Like so many others, Marla found herself struggling to keep her dreams alive while still providing what was necessary to raise a family. She dreamt of one day finding her destiny, raising her children, and owning a home. These things had never worked out before, how could it even be possible now? Was she simply not meant to take hold of her dreams? And then God spoke. When Marla began to see meaning and messages in mundane activities, she realized that God was trying to get her attention. He wanted to whisk her away on a wild adventure of promises fulfilled, faith sustained, and dreams realized. But first, he wanted her heart. In God, 217, and Me, follow Marla's incredible story of how God can take everyday occurrences and turn them into opportunities to reassure his people of his love and presence. In return for her faith, God graciously gave her the desires of her heart. She couldn't have imagined what God had waiting for her. Just as he had kept saying to her in the past, she was thinking too small!
