In the past twenty years, China has witnessed the flowering of an independent documentary cinema characterized by a particular vérité aesthetic. Independent Chinese Documentary traces the roots of this style back to the 1980s, and the gradual abandonment of studio-based filmmaking, dominant during the Maoist era, for shooting live and on location. Known in Chinese as xianchang – or being on "the scene" – this documentary practice is partly distinguished by its embrace of the contingent. Through a series of synoptic case studies, this book considers the different ways in which contingency manifests in independent Chinese documentary; the practical and aesthetic challenges its mediation presents for individual film directors; and the reasons for the quality's significance, set against the backdrop of China's ongoing postsocialist transition, and the consequences of this process for the very act of documentary representation itself.

China's independent documentaries - films produced outside the country's officialstate-sanctioned production channels - have been rewriting the rules regarding whatcan and cannot be shown of China's contemporary reality on screen for over twodecades. Most academic literature, however, has focused on the first wave ofindependent documentaries made in the early to mid-1990s by former televisionworkers such as Wu Wenguang and Duan Jinchuan. This thesis instead focuses onthe independent documentaries that have been produced since the arrival of digitaltechnologies on the Chinese mainland from the late 1990s, by filmmakers such as OuNing, Hu Jie, Ai Xiaoming and Zhao Liang. It argues that since the turn of thiscentury, digital technologies have facilitated the rise of an unofficial screening culturein China and a socially engaged strand of independent documentaries that seek torepresent grassroots experiences of China's contemporary reality on screen.Drawing on the work of Oskar Negt and Alexander Kluge, this thesisconceptualises China's independent documentary culture as an alternative publicsphere in which ideas, values and experiences can be represented and circulated thatare systematically excluded from the official public sphere of film and televisionoverseen by the party-state. In order to explicate this conceptual framework, thisthesis commences with an analysis of the workings of China's official public sphere.It argues that since the early 1990s, the Chinese party-state has attempted to moveaway from a heavy reliance on coercion to maintain one-party rule and has insteadtried to engineer a particular form of authoritarian hegemony. A central aspect of thishegemonic strategy is the shaping of public discourse in order to propagate certainsanctioned ideas and viewpoints to the widest possible audience, while marginalisingor completing suppressing the dissemination of others. It is this state-sanctionedpublic discourse circulated through the official public sphere that China's sociallyengaged independent documentaries question, probe and contest.The main body of this thesis substantiates this argument through a closetextual analysis of a range of contemporary independent Chinese documentaries, thatengage with a variety of prominent social issues such as urban redevelopment, therepresentation and memorialisation of history, the spread of HIV/AIDS, the rule oflaw and debates around morals and ethics. These analyses detail the various ways inwhich independent documentaries contest state-sanctioned public discourse throughboth their form and content. The social impact of these films and their disseminationvia unofficial channels is also analysed, as well as the ways in which they intersectwith other forms of unofficial public discourse in today's China, especially in theonline realm.Through the conceptualisation of various official and unofficial publicspheres in contemporary China, and the role of independent documentary culture inthe country's unofficial public culture, this thesis will greatly enhance scholarlyunderstandings of China's independent documentary cinema, the politicised natureof "publicness" in today's China, and the particular political role these films areplaying within China's distinctive social, economic and political context.

In 1990s post-Reform China, a growing number of people armed with video cameras poured out upon the Chinese landscape to both observe and contribute to the social changes then underway. Happening upon the crucial platform of an older independent film movement, this digital turn has given us a "DV China" that includes film and media communities across different social strata and disenfranchised groups, including ethnic and religious minorities and LGBTQ communities. DV-Made China takes stock of these phenomena by surveying the social and cultural landscape of grassroots and alternative cinema practices after the digital turn around the beginning of the new century. The volume shows how Chinese independent, amateur, and activist filmmakers energize the tension between old and new media, performance and representation, fiction and non-fiction, art and politics, China and the world. Essays by scholars in cinema and media studies, anthropology, history, Asian and Tibetan studies bring innovative interdisciplinary methodologies to critically expand upon existing scholarship on contemporary Chinese independent documentary. Their inquiries then extend to narrative feature, activist video, animation, and other digital hybrids. At every turn, the book confronts digital ironies: On the one hand, its portability facilitates forms of radically private film production and audience habits of small-screen consumption.
