Two award-winning plays from the legendary activist and dramatist who has been called “one of the best writers of our times.” (Lambda Book Report) The Normal Heart, set during the early years of the AIDS epidemic, is the impassioned indictment of a society that allowed the plague to happen, a moving denunciation of the ignorance and fear that helped kill an entire generation. It has been produced and taught all over the world. Its companion play, The Destiny of Me is the stirring story of an AIDs activist forced to put his life in the hands of the very doctor he has been denouncing. The Normal Heart was selected as one of the 100 Greatest Plays of the Twentieth Century by the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain The Destiny of Me was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, a double Obie winner, and the recipient of the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Play of the Year. Most ventricular tachyarrhythmias are associated with some form of cardiac pathology, however, some forms, particularly right ventricular outflow tract tachycardia and fascicular tachycardia can occur in the normal heart. This places pressure on the electrophysiologist to distinguish benign forms from VTs caused by cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, congenital heart disease etc. The aim of the Clinical Approaches to Tachyarryhthmias series is to update the physician, cardiologist, and all those responsible for the the care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias. In this monograph, John Bourke and Colin Doig review our current understanding of normal heart ventricular tachycardia, and update the reader on how recent findings are enabling better physiological understanding, diagnosis and treatment of specific normal heart VTs.

"This is a Ph.D. dissertation. Cardiac excitation-contraction (EC) coupling is the process from electrical excitation to contraction of the heart. Electrical stimulation of cardiac cells gives rise to an action potential, which triggers a systolic rise of the intracellular Ca2+ concentration, initiating a contraction. Contents include: Introduction, Excitation-contraction coupling in cardiac muscle, Excitation-contraction coupling in the failing heart, Aims, Methods, Animal models, Cell isolation, Experimental setup, Experimental protocols, Protein expression levels, Echocardiographic measurements, Data analysis, Results, Mechanisms underlying the frequency dependence of contraction and Ca2+i transients in mouse ventricular myocytes, Ca2+ handling and contractile dysfunction in ventricular myocytes of MLP, Ca2+ handling in the SERCA 2b/b mouse, General discussion, and Summary."

The maintenance of arterial blood pressure and the distribution of blood flow to the various organs of the body depends on the control of the pumping action of the heart and of the resistance of the vascular beds in the individual organs in accordance with their metabolic needs. These controls are achieved through the integrated actions of circulat ing hormones, humoral factors that are synthesized and released in the heart and blood vessels, and the autonomic nervous system. The heart, however, is not only the target for the direct and indirect actions of a number of hormones and humoral factors, it is also an endocrine organ in the traditional sense, synthesizing and secreting into the circulation chemical factors that act at distant sites. In this treatise, Hormones and the Heart in Health and Disease, we interpret "endocrinology" broadly and consider traditional hormones as well as autocoids that are secreted by the heart or that act on it. In this overview, the relevant chapters are indicated in parentheses. The discovery of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP; atrial natriuretic factor, ANF) in the 1980s indicated that the heart does indeed function as an endocrine organ in the classic sense. ANP (Chapter I) is synthesized in the heart and secreted into the circulation for actions on the kidney, where it is a potent natriuretic agent, and on the vasculature, where it causes vasodilation. ANP can also affect myocardial contractility.
